Sara says: “The exhibition DINOSARAUS features two of my greatest loves, freedom and nature. FREEDOM: Being naked in nature has always made me feel free and relaxed. As a photographer I wanted to capture this feeling of being free in images, so 3 years ago I started taking naked self-portraits on a trip to Alaska and I have been doing it ever since. NATURE: I want to make nature a more important and real element in my work for this exhibition. How? By bringing an element of real nature to the photos. The last three years I have experimented with scanned pieces of flowers and plants on top of photographs. This is what I am doing for this exhibition. The result will be a mix of free expression and fresh, beautiful nature – reflecting my vision and my aim with the series – to make people care more about nature.”
Robert Muntean, Returner
Spoil and Fill is a moving image project and installation revealing the dramatic story of 80 Bishopsgate, a building destroyed by an IRA bomb in 1993, rebuilt, and subsequently demolished in 2011.
A personal project for artist Amanda Loomes – who previously worked in the construction industry and was a site engineer on the re-building of 80 Bishopsgate before beginning her career as an artist – Spoil and Fill is also Loomes’ largest project to date. Drawing from the artist’s archive of documentation on the building and historical footage of the city, a video is projected onto a wall built from 144 concrete test cubes in the gallery which stands minutes from the location of the bombing. In addition the installation comprises a pop-up book by artist Marenka Gabeler and texts from writer Charmian Griffin, these works were developed in collaboration with Loomes in response to investigations into ruins, facsimiles and decay.

Richard Saltoun, 6-8pm private view Viennese Season: Feminism

Richard Saltoun Gallery announce the second of their two-part series of Viennese art: Feminism.
Following on from Part I: Actionism, Richard Saltoun will present the work of VALIE EXPORT and Friedl Kubelka. Both artists posited their art at the centre of artistic debates of subjects of gender, the body, and politics. The photographic images and films that result from their practices are presented through the lens of a personal reflective awareness of the body.
VALIE EXPORT Smart / Export II, 1968/1970

Standpoint Gallery is proud to present a solo show of new work by the 2013 Mark Tanner Sculpture Award winner Iain Hales. Hales was selected from over 200 applicants from across the UK, by a panel comprising Lisa Le Feuvre, Director of Sculpture Studies at the Henry Moore Institute, British Sculptor Richard Deacon, MTSA winner 2011 Jemima Brown, and MTSA trustee Rebecca Scott. Iain Hales grounds his practice in the formal ‘language’ of sculpture, exploring traditional considerations of weight, form, geometry, balance, texture, composition, scale, and colour. Within this repertoire, however, he often takes a humorous, sideways look at some of the gendered or sexualised associations of simple forms and architectural motifs.

Beers Contemporary, 6-9pm private view 'In Place of a Trophy' group show

Artists: Vasilis Asimakopoulos, Leo Babsky, Olivier Kosta-Thefaine, Frank Maier
'In Place of a Trophy' puts forward four internationally based artists who are professionally situated at the crux between emerging and midcareer, each of whom produces compelling artwork of an extremely high quality that transcends any conventional understanding of the object of art. The selected artwork presents a physical reconstruction of a concept of the constructed environment; through the displacement of structure and re-imagining of context and materiality, the works reconsider our understanding of space and construct as material and unstable.

The Approach Gallery, 6pm private view Sam Windett soloshow

Opening 11 April 2014, Studio Voltaire will present a new commission by Latvian-born, New York-based Ella Kruglyanskaya, her first solo show in a public gallery outside of the US. Kruglyanskaya’s paintings vigorously play with the female form, female sexuality and social interaction.
Kruglyanskaya’s cartoon-like characters are friends and ‘frienemies’ down at the beach, out-and-about, running from a menacing presence: enforced neighbours butting against each other in the tight space of the stretched canvas. These buxom women anticipate an audience, exaggerating both voyeurism and exhibitionism, confronting cultural tropes with bawdy humour.

This two hour talk gives you the opportunity to networking with other artists after the event.

Schwartz Gallery, 6-9pm private view Lana Locke 'Damaging Objects'

Damaging Objects is the first in a series of solo exhibitions by emerging contemporary artists at Schwartz Gallery, and Lana Locke’s first gallery solo show.
Damaging Objects has two implications for the art objects in the exhibition: objects that have damage done to them, and objects that are enacting damage (or planning to). Building on the themes of Locke’s practice-based PhD on The agonistic struggle of the art object against the space in which it is installed, the objects and the gallery space become adversaries in a power struggle. Setting up a precarious environment in the gallery, the twin strands of damage seep from the objects as they engage with the space: the one strand aggressive, picking a fight with the space; the other melancholic, fragile, and licking their wounds.

Breese Little Gallery, 6-9pm Elio Rodríguez: Corridas y Venidas

Corridas y Venidas is a selection of Rodríguez’s recent work including paintings, silkscreen prints, etchings and sculpture. This multi media selection is unusual for Rodríguez who tends to exhibit the many strands of his practise in isolation. He describes the processes as so distinct that the results can suggest a different artist at work. However, clear threads are consistent through Rodríguez’s practise, contributing to the commercialised myth of Macho Enterprise, the concept behind his entire body of work.

The Contemporary London and Griffin Gallery, 6:30-8:30pm private view Archaelogies group show

Artists: Vasilis Avramidis, Jess Littlewood, Suzanne Moxhay and Reginal Aloysious
Archaeologies presents alternative landscapes that invite us into uncanny private new worlds of imagination, fantasy and marked human absence. Both Avramidis and Aloysius create intensely detailed and skillfully delicate lush environments, where architecture is entangled with wild vegetation and the traditional and modern are meshed together. In contrast Littlewood and Moxhay’s post-Apocalyptic isolated spaces confront the viewer with a silent timelessness of cultivated order and the struggle for the ideal. With each of the works the viewer stumbles onto moments where they are forced to question the narratives of what has just happened and what events are yet to take place.

Carl Freedman Gallery, 6-8pm private view Jessie Flood-Paddock 'Nude'

Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, 6:30-9pm private view Hector Castells-Matutano 'Plasvivor'

Sheets of plastic lay outstretched as if pressed between slides, ready to view through a microscope. Their thin skin takes on a transparency that imbues this most hardy of industrial materials with a delicacy, rendering them fragile. Pieces of ripped-up plastic bags are joined by other paraphernalia, bits and pieces, bottle caps and feathers, transforming into a strange, postmodern stained glass window. In other works, large sculptures are altars to our consumer society, while long reels of slides, lit from behind, become intricate mosaics, illuminated manuscripts telling the tale of the human detritus that makes up our streets.

Domobaal Gallery, 6-8pm private view Rachel Adams solo show

Rachel Adams’ work is drawing, but not quite as we know it. Using paper draped over wooden armatures to create large sculptural forms in bleached-out, faded pastel tones, Adams extrapolates one of drawing’s traditional functions – to define spatial relationships on a plane – into three dimensions. Her work occupies the space of the gallery much as a bronze sculpture would, but with none of its mass and spatial aggression.

Bearspace, 6-9pm private view Alastair Gordon 'What You Will'

Alastair John Gordon’s recent work strongly references a tradition of illusionistic painting that proliferated in Northern Europe from about 1600. A specific form of illusionism called quodlibet(what you will). From here he paints an array of selected objects that on first glance appear to be ‘pinned’ or ‘taped’ in low relief. Certain questions emerge about the craft of the artist, representation and the artist’s materials.

FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/642481522499624/?ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular
HYSTERIA presents a one-day exhibition for artworks that explore the potential of feminist resistance and transformation, providing a space for artists who dare to lay bare the reality of patriarchy. Such is a reality that can be denaturalized, scrutinized and criticized but the question remains, can it ultimately be disrupted? Can feminist critique catch up with reality or collapse into futility? It is the impossibility of capturing a moment of detour from reality that art renders momentarily possible. HYSTERIA strives to prompt viewers and the viewed at this exhibition to reflect on how cultural imagery and narratives potentialize manifestation in reality.

SATURDAY 26 APRIL
On Saturday 26 April, in addition to of Rachel Adams’ exhibition we also present 2 projects outside the front of the gallery. 'Men In Black - Barry Sonnenfeld 1997' by the design group INTERNATIONAL LAWNS, who, driven by a fascination and respect for the history of brand management and corporate identity, undertake projects by both commission and personal motivation. In contrast to the façade of resolute self-belief characterised by most large design groups, INTERNATIONAL LAWNS practice a philosophy of doubt, questions and distraction. Current projects include a re-working of Raymond Loewy’s decommissioned cloverleaf co-op logo, an unsolicited rebrand for BT and strategic restructuring of the Rural College of Art. For EC1 & WC1 Gallery Day 2014 they will present 'Men In Black - Barry Sonnenfeld 1997' from their 'Cinematic Lawns' range, an extension of the Lawn Archive.

Auto Italia South East, 7-9pm private view opti-ME: visions and strategies for tomorrow, today

opti-ME* is a month-long exhibition and event series bringing together a selection of creative workers to interrogate the role of the artist, both as model for radical change and as self-promotional strategist. Exploring different types of artistic agency and modes of (identity) production, invited collaborators will occupy a transformed Auto Italia space, using it as an experimental testing-ground for new work and proposals, and questioning what "being artist" might mean as their skills and production methods become increasingly embedded across other industries.

TUESDAY 29 APRIL

Parasol Unit, 6-9pm poetry workshop Poems&Possiblities (£5/£6)

Using the new exhibition by Shezad Dawood, Towards the Possible Film, as inspiration, this poetry workshop, led by Simon Pomery, will encourage the translation of filmic methods into your poems. We will read and discuss poetry inspired by films, and use a variety of methods for our writings, including concrete poetry.

White Cube, 6-9pm private view Andreas Gursky solo show

The exhibition centres around a striking new series of photographs that appropriate images taken from Hollywood ‘superhero’ feature films. These ‘superhero’ works from 2013-2014, depict scenes from the Ironman III, Batman and Spiderman films respectively, portraying instantly recognisable comic characters amid idealised, isolated landscapes. The works evoke a sense of alienation, asserting both the power of fantasy and pervasiveness of pop cultural imagery and its immersive presence in the communal psyche.

White Cube, 6-9pm private view 'Inside the White Cube' group show

Artists: Brendan Lynch, Alex Perweiler, Peter Sutherland, Alex de Corte, Jack Greer, Augustus Thompson

Leyden Gallery, 6:30-9pm private view 'Ancient/Modern' group show

Leyden Gallery is proud to present the second of their Platform for Emerging Arts shows. Once again our curated exhibition features a select group of emerging and graduate artists; their work has been chosen by way of its engagement with our current theme, Ancient/Modern and high-lights the work of an outstanding group of artists and their remarkable art.

The Show Room, 6:3-8:30pm private view How To Work Together: Gerry Bibby

The Showroom is pleased to present an ambitious new commission by Berlin-based Australian artist Gerry Bibby. After his project at Frieze Art Fair in 2013, this will be the artist’s first solo presentation in a public space in the UK. Venturing beyond the scope of a typical artist commission, Bibby will take up residence at The Showroom and work behind the scenes, exploring the possibilities and limitations of the artist/institution dynamic. From this shift in position, he will probe the idiosyncrasies of the organisation’s apparatuses – focusing in particular on The Showroom’s heating system, rendering it as potential creative material.

WEDNESDAY 30 APRIL

Arcade, 6-8pm private view Luca Bertolo and Alessandra Spranzi

Arcade is pleased to present a new exhibition by Luca Bertolo & Alessandra Spranzi, two of Italy’s leading protagonists of painting and photography.
Luca Bertolo and Alessandra Spranzi have several things in common. An attitude toward art that favours impulse, chance, and accident over any predetermined vision. A preference for everyday objects and materials, and a flair for finding unexpected meaning in them. And lastly, an approach to image-making which never hides its tools – the tricks of the trade – and which situates the work at a point midway between the image and its own surface.

CANCELLED DUE TO TUBE STRICKE!!
