http://www.wilkinsongallery.com/exhibitions/105-TravisJeppesen16Sculptures
50 Vyner St London E2 9DQ

Sprüth Magers, 7pm private view Louise Lawler 'No Drones'
http://spruethmagers.com/exhibitions/373
7a Grafton St London W1S 4EJ

For No Drones, Lawler will exhibit a group of ‘tracings’, a series that she developed for her exhibition at the Ludwig Museum, Cologne, in 2013. Traced directly from her photographs, and made in collaboration with the artist and children’s book illustrator Jon Buller, the ‘tracings’ are black-and-white line drawings that are converted to a vector graphic and printed on a vinyl that is adhered directly to the wall. Each edition exists as an adaptable digital file that can be printed at any size. A ‘tracing’ takes material form only when exhibited, and it can be destroyed and remade at a different size for its next presentation. Some of the works in the show are editions of 10, while others are unlimited editions.

Wednesday 2 July

Chisenhale gallery, 6:30-8:30pm private view Edward Thomasson 'The Present Tense'
http://www.chisenhale.org.uk/exhibitions/forthcoming.php?id=140
64 Chisenhale road, London, E3 5QZ
The Present Tense brings together three interconnecting stories, exploring the ways in which proximity and distance alter our understanding of one another. Set on and around a building site, a cycle of urban demolition and construction provides a backdrop for the physical and emotional regeneration of the central characters.

Catching the Eye is an exhibition by a group of artists practising painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media. Schwartz Gallery, 6-9pm private view Kazuya Tsuji 'Or'
http://kazuyatsuji.com/
http://www.schwartzgallery.co.uk/front-page/
92 White Post La London E9 5EN
‘Or’ is the third in a series of solo exhibitions by emerging contemporary artists at Schwartz Gallery, and Kazuya Tsuji’s first gallery solo show.
The title refers to Tsuji’s minimalist sculpture that bears the same name, ‘Or’ – an exercise in the malleable existence of objects in different spaces.
In his practice Kazuya seeks a niche for art in his everyday routine. For instance, most of his works appear to be simple juxtapositions of collected or found objects. When those objects are seen next to each other, they begin to form a certain metaphor for life. Likewise once the show finishes the objects cease to function as a piece of art and return to their original state.
This idea derives from his main concern about his practice that true beauty breathes through the gaps in mundane knowledge and it can show the miraculous, the hilarious, the grotesque and the wonderful every step of the way.

Griffin Gallery, 6-9pm private view Perfectionism group show
http://griffingallery.co.uk/exhibition/perfectionism/
21 Evesham Street, London W11 4AJ0
Artists: Dale Adcock, Jemma Appleby, Katrina Blannin, Jane Dixon, Lee Edwards, Iavor Lubomirov, Carol Robertson, Inbal Strauss, Tanya Wood
This exhibition does not seek to be perfect. Neither does it claim to showcase perfect artists. Instead, this is an exploration of perfectionism of process. Of artists so committed to their practice that it permeates their every movement and waking thought, manifest in the meticulous detail demonstrated in their work.

Thursday 3 July

Art House1, 6:30-8:30pm private view 'In Tension' group show
http://www.arthouse1.co.uk/coming-soon.html
45 Grange Road, London SE1 3BH
Artists: Valentine Schmidt, Sam Hall
London – 24 June, 2014 – Valentine Schmidt and Sam Hall might seem to be unlikely exhibition partners, one a photographer, the other a ceramist. That is until their work is placed in proximity, then the logic and resonance appear. Tension is at the heart of what both of these artists do, however they deal in different idioms of ‘tension’; one a quiet, almost subliminal whisper of conflicts or neglect which leave revealing marks on souls and places, the other an active agitation and playful aggression springing from one mnemonic incised on the studio wall – fight.

Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, 6:30-9pm private view 'What You See Is What You See' group show
http://www.kristinhjellegjerde.com/what_you_see.html
533 Old York Road, SW18 1TG London, United Kingdom
Artists: Carsten Fock, Sintra Tantra
Bright, audacious colours in geometric forms spread over the gallery walls, a wallpaper of precisely-rendered paintings in hues of blue, teal, green, grey and bubble gum pink. Elsewhere, canvases burst forth with feathered hatchings of various colours, some producing rainbows of confetti, others rainstorms of thunderclouds. These two different yet complementary series play with and speak to the space around them, at once individual works and an integrated part of the space in which they hang. In ‘What You See Is What You See’, new works by German artist Carsten Fock and British-Balinese artist Sinta Tantra meld into colour abstractions to create an immersive synergy within the gallery space.

Foundation & Trust Gallery, 6-8pm private view Alice Evans 'Hiraeth'
www.foundationandtrust.org
2 Balfron Tower, St Leonard’s Road, London, E14 0QT
Alice Evans is an artist working in the medium of film and photography. Her exhibition Hiraeth features three new film works based around ideas of home. ‘Hiraeth’ is a Welsh word which is considered untranslatable. Its closest equivalent in English is probably an intense feeling of longing associated with ideas of home.

Acme Project Space, 6-8pm private view Kate McMillan 'The Potter's Field'
www.acme.org.uk/projectspace.php
44 Bonner Rd London E2 9JS
This exhibition features the residue of images and sounds that have been traced and collected from sites associated with symbolic early memories, including a naturally occurring clay field next to the artist's childhood home, a decaying Roman castle and the sodden clay cliffs along a beach on the Isle of Wight. These residues have been manipulated and intuited into a series of small sculptures that suggest the shape and form of anxiety and heaviness. Importantly the work emphasises the use of hands as a way to mark presence and evidence the traces of self.

Frith Street Gallery, 6-8pm private view 'Mirror' group show
http://www.frithstreetgallery.com/shows/view/mirror/
17 Golden Sq London W1F 9JJ
Artists: Fiona Banner, Mohamed Bourouissa, Victor Man, Margaux Williamson
Mirror presents the work of four artists, each of whom work within the realm of portraiture and use the device of storytelling as a means of exploring personal identity and collective memory. In the mid 20th century psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan hypothesised that the formation of identity arose primarily in recognition of the reflection as oneself. Exploring the importance of identity, self-reflection and memory, Mirror presents us with a grouping of works of alternative and reinterpreted realities, circumstances or truths. The works in the exhibition combine forms of documentary and fiction, even hinting toward memorialization, to reveal alternatives to our commonly understood lines of history.

Boxpark, 6-9pm First Thursday Yoni Alter
http://www.boxpark.co.uk/event/firstthursdaysyonialter/
2 Bethnal Green Rd, London E1 6HT
Since 2006 Yoni not only calls London ‘home’ but also a source of inspiration. Israeli-British artist Yoni Alter (born 1980) studied in Jerusalem Academy of Art & Design and completed his MA Graphic Design at London College of Communication. His debut London show at Kemistry Gallery was inspired by urban landscapes and architecture, and in particular by London. Rather than drawing in a stylized way, Alter applies different reduction methods on visuals. Yoni recently worked on a piece of break-through branding for London’s new TV Channel, London Live. His merchandise range for Tate has recently launched.

P21 Gallery, 6-9pm private view Issam Kourbaj 'Unearthed'

Deeply affected by the ongoing violence and huge numbers of casualties in his home country, Kourbaj has created numerous multimedia works. Knox’s research-based practice encompasses various media, including moving image, print and performance. For the first time in its five year existence, studio1.1′s annual Lottery has been won not by a single artist able to present a solo show, but by writer and curator Paul Carey-Kent.
‘The found and the collaged are dominant modern modes: what artists choose to use, and how and why they present or combine them, count for more than their ability with traditional techniques. One could also say that life in most of the world is less about individual survival than it would have been in pre-modern eras, more about how we live together and whether we can survive that.

Friday 4 July

Studio Voltaire, 6:30-8:30pm private view Judith Bernstein 'Rising'
http://www.studiovoltaire.org/programmes/forthcoming/
1A Nelsons Row London SW4 7JR
Bernstein’s expressive practice embodies the psychological amalgamation of sex, violence and feminism, in varying orders and priorities. Birth of the Universe is a recent series of expressive paintings made using oil and fluorescent paint exploring the chaos, violence, and the nuclear explosion that was The Big Bang. She probes the origin of space, time, and infinity, using the rage of the "active cunt" as the primal source in the expanding universe. These paintings delve into issues regarding relationships and gender with a literal dialogue between the "active cunt" and the phallus.

http://www.creativeandorcultural.com/index.php/foam-images
171 Mare St London E8 3RD
Foam is an on-going peripatetic project by artist Mat Jenner. Conceived as both a platform for experimental commissioning and an expansive artwork, Foam explores the condition of the contemporary art object and a problematized relationship to spectatorship, dissemination, presence and display.
At the heart of Foam is a growing archive of dub plates, one-off 12” records commissioned from over 100 invited artists. The archive is presented within strict parameters that emphasises the records status as art objects - records are unique, they can only be listened to in situ within ANDOR’s physical location and are not replicated, broadcasted or digitally disseminated.

Union Gallery, 6-9pm private view Soon Hak Kwon 'Truth is in the Detail'
www.union-gallery.com
94 Teesdale St London E2 6PU
Soon Hak Kwon’s work is like staring at a blank wall. Which is not to say that it’s boring. Rather, it is to say that this artist’s work has much in common with a Buddhist meditation technique in which practicing monks focus intently on a spot of unadorned wall for an extended period of time (while it may seem like a clichéd tactic of an outmoded Orientalism to frame a discussion of a contemporary Korean artist in such terms, Kwon readily asserts the similarities in conversation). As the practitioner progresses through the meditative states, his cognitive processes typically shift away from internal stream of conscious thought toward a heightened awareness of the external fine details of the wall he faces. This state of heightened awareness set against the minimal visual stimuli provided by the static, monochromatic wall offers the sitter — eventually and ideally — conscious access to the faculties of perception that normally function outside of conscious control.

A Group Show curated by Mia Pfeifer, In Support of Acid Attack Victims
The victims of acid attacks are overwhelmingly women. The majority of acid attacks are aimed at the face provoking lifelong bodily disfigurement, physical pain, psychological trauma as well as social isolation. ‘The severity of the damage depends on the concentration of the acid and the period of time before the acid is thoroughly washed off with water or neutralized with a neutralizing agent. The acid can rapidly eat away skin, the layer of fat beneath the skin, and in some cases even the underlying bone. Eyelids and lips may be completely destroyed, the nose and ears severely damaged.’ Acid violence is a worldwide phenomenon that is not restricted to a particular race, religion, economical background or geographical location.

His interest in prehistory lies particularly in the connection between prehistoric works and their environment. For example Stonehenge gives meaning to the landscape in a conceptual way, it transforms the landscape, it turns a space into a place.

Foundation & Trust Gallery, 6-8pm private view Ben Fitton 'Various Weak Singularities and Fowl'
www.foundationandtrust.org
2 Balfron Tower, St Leonard’s Road, London, E14 0QT

For this exhibition, the walls of the gallery will have been freshly re-plastered. As the surface of each wall dries out, variations in the thickness of the plaster will cause some areas to dry faster than others, gradually and imperfectly revealing a series of images and texts as shifting areas of lingering moisture. These spectres will attempt to mimic their own transience by recounting the eventual passing of specific moments of threat or rupture: situations which will have appeared insurmountable or catastrophic in the moment, but whose consequences will most likely recede or fail to fully materialise. Over the course of the exhibition, these areas of moisture will themselves dry out, leaving only the faintest trace of their existence in the smooth plaster surface, which will then be ready for painting in readiness for the next exhibition.

The history of London is told through the story of its bridges. They have informed how the city has grown and how power has been distributed. Equally, they have an emotional place in our psyche as both beautiful and symbolic structures that have inspired painters, poets and designers through the years.

http://www.galleryso.com/publications/3/

Through his departure from traditional jewellery, Bernhard Schobinger denies jewellery its function as a status symbol and makes it into a vehicle for expressing a universal critical voice.
The ring is a significant cultural reference in our society: it bears a coveted diamond or is a symbol of togetherness. This is not the case with Bernhard Schobinger! His objects created over the last 45 years reflect artistic and social developments. The ring as the witness of an era: concrete art, the aesthetics of punk, postmodernism and so on.

Wanderings, 6-11pm private view 'Wanderings' group show
The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage St, London E1 5LJ

The work on display forms disparate and personal, yet ultimately connected trails for the viewer to navigate. The common link is a series of reactions to urban life, but the show also testifies to the universal bonds of artistry and provides a fascinating report on the state of art internationally. As such, Wanderings also represents the labyrinth faced by young artists in the 21st century: the search for identity, integrity and international exposure, balanced against expectation and the forces of culture and economy.

Lisson Gallery, 6-8pm private view 'Where were you'
www.lissongallery.com
52-54 Bell St, London NW1 5DA

Artists: Allora & Calzadilla, Cory Arcangel, N. Dash, Robert Janitz, Paulo Monteiro, David Ostrowski, Michael Rey, Julia Rommel, Dan Shaw-Town
Taking its title from a 1978 song of the same name by British punk band The Mekons, Where Were You? is a group show of paintings, prints, relief objects and works on canvas that seem to require minimal intervention on the artists’ behalf, but actually belie the often complex ideas or extended periods of time spent contemplating, reworking and refining these processes. Although Minimalism has been presented in many of its guises at Lisson Gallery over the decades, through exhibitions of Peter Joseph, Robert Mangold, Robert Ryman, Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt among others, Where Were You? focuses on the work of nine artists, five of which have not shown in the UK before. Each of them articulates a minimalist aesthetic through abstraction, repetition or interruptions in surface and structure, foregrounding the intention, scale and execution of their gestures as both subjects for their work and as performative records of transient actions or incomplete thoughts.

Foundation & Trust Gallery, 6-8pm private view Matt Moser-Clark 'Letters To Maurice'
www.foundationandtrust.org
2 Balfron Tower, St Leonard’s Road, London, E14 0QT

The show will be largely a drawing show and all the work will have been made specifically for the gallery. The artist imagines the drawings as a series of letters to a friend, episodes or albums one may say. Each talk to one another and to themselves about relationships, motion, scale, balance and of the time taken to make them. There will be a chair in the upstairs gallery. It is the chair Moser-Clark has used in the making of each drawing, where he has sat to talk to each one and to ask it why it is how it is? The audience will not be invited to sit, nor will they be discouraged, it is just a chair and should be treated like all chairs. In the library there will be an open letter, written to Maurice but for all to read. In that letter the artist talks to the viewer about themes in the drawing and about what led him to these conclusions.

Before the hipsters, before the boutiques, before the bars, in a then derelict part of the East End, Joshua Compston’s decision to open an art gallery on Charlotte Road and stage collaborative street events re-drew the artistic and cultural map of London and the contemporary art scene. For Joshua Compston (1970 - 1996), life was a special kind of nonsense; Factual Nonsense. Seen by some as the romantic martyr of his generation and by others, as a prankster, sending up the art establishment, Compston’s gallery ‘Factual Nonsense’ (FN) was quite unlike any other.

Itinerancy has increasingly become one of the primary characteristics that differentiate the lifestyles of the people, particularly the young, of contemporary western societies from the lifestyles of their predecessors. We move from city to city, rented accommodation to rented accommodation at an ever-increasing pace. A consequence of employment becoming increasingly flexible and precarious as well as a workforce that is more skilled and less laden with material and maternal/paternal commitments than its precursors. It is a process that is also hastened by a housing market in which supply and demand have slowly drifted apart from each other. This situation is nowhere more evident than in London, a city in which the migratory flow around and through it happens at an exhilarating pace and where the ideologically driven discourse on how to manage the places we live in is at its most charged.

Peter von Kant, 6-8pm late night 'Mugshots: Sally Kindberg + Philadelphia PD'
www.petervonkant.com
25 Tanners Hill London SE8 4PJ
Successful portraits resist description in a way that other types of picture do not. A portrait is something other than just an image. Simple images aspire to tautology; ‘I am what I depict’ they insist. Portraits make the precise inverse of this claim. Portraits suffer from the ravages of their sitters’ old age and dissolute characters. See these two black and white images of a man’s head, face-on and in profile. The expression is inscrutable; is it fear, anger, defiance, resignation? That his name, aliases, the nature of his crime and the date of his arrest are listed on the reverse is of no help.

http://www.bearspace.co.uk/exhibitions/dream-life-of-debris
152 Deptford High Street London SE8 3PQ
Victoria’s practice is heavily invested within the craft of traditional drawing methods, ranging from drawings, stencils and etchings through to painting. She uses this rich history within print making to construct a conversation between the old and new, while using subject matter to describe this break in nature. The show is a result of three years of focus within this discipline of print and drawing. The work itself consists of landscapes drawn with Arney's distinct style and touch. The sources of these prints are images found on the Internet, of contemporary landscapes, vast seas, forests, ruin, decay and disasters. These landscapes hold the sublime nature of catastrophe, places fractured by physical shifts.

ASC Gallery, 6-9pm late opening Sylwia Narbutt 'Motherland'
http://www.ascstudios.co.uk/event/window-space-sylwia-narbutt-motherland/
128 Blackfriars Road SE1 8EQ

Sylwia is using the icon of the Black Madonna which has been intimately associated with Poland for hundreds of years.
She is especially interested in this picture, a small reproduction of it used to hang above her bed in her family home. She remembers being scared of it as her granny told her a story that if she was naughty the scars on the Madonna will grow and the Madonna will be in pain, the whole country could be in trouble.
Madonna comes from abroad – her assimilation is total as she has become the symbolic queen of Poland, loved and preyed to by millions.
Sylwia looks at her own assimilation in UK. She revisits her culture and background to construct a new reality as a Polish Briton.

Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, 6:30-9pm private view Andrea Francolino 'A-Biotic'
http://www.kristinhjellegjerde.com
533 Old York Road, SW18 1TG London, United Kingdom
Imagine a time when all that we know is gone. Towering skyscrapers and concrete giants, all that epitomises humankind’s modern achievement, are powerless in the face of time. Gleaming walls of glass and marble are reduced to dust and rubble. Imagine, now, what would remain among the rusted, twisted steel and desiccated piles of stone – a tendril of something green, vibrant and alive. New leaves sprout from a mountain of concrete, rising delicately towards the sun. It is nature, creeping back, coming to reclaim this wasteland, for even in the bleakest place there is always life.

Beers Contemporary, 6-9pm private view 'Cut/Copy/Paste' group show
http://www.beerscontemporary.com/exhibitions/cut-copy-paste
1 Baldwin St, London EC1V 9NU
Artists: Frank Hallam Day, Michael Mapes, Brian Porray
Cut/Copy/Paste presents three American artists who explore the boundaries of the contemporary collage and the re-appropriation of images. Though each artist displays a distinct (yet related) body of work, the exhibition presents the artistic practice as limitless and endlessly reinterpretable; an interminable platform for the interrelating discourses and references of re-imagined images in a contemporary context. The pastel-colour smudged mark made of a fragment in time, the kaleidoscope of a repeated geometric motif, the snippets of photographs and locks of hair – the reinvented; the cut, the copied, the pasted.

Whitechapel Gallery, 7pm film Rough Cut
http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/shop/product/category_id/46/product_id/1969
77-82 Whitechapel High St London E1 7QX
A documentary about a film that never was, Rough Cutby artist Jamie Shovlin explores the making of a 1970s exploitation film, Hiker Meat; an imaginary concept by fictitious Italian director Jesus Rinzoli. This film-within-a-film operates as both affectionate homage to and academic deconstruction of the exploitation genre, creating a Frankenstein-esque cut-and-paste of the era's concerns and fascinations, emphasising the archetypes and mythologies of this often critically maligned period of film-making. Described by director Shovlin as a 'metamentary', stripping back the making, unmaking and remaking of both the film and the idea, as a kind of ode to the power of imagination.
£8.50/£6.50 concession (£4.25 Whitechapel Gallery Members). *Proof of concessions and membership to be shown on the door.

Brixton Gallery, 6-9pm private view 'Missing Narrative' Camberwell MA graduates
http://cadifroehlich.wordpress.com/?p=2122&preview=true
35 Brixton Station Road, Brixton, London, SW9 8PB

Artists: Rose Bell, Mel Cole, Gin Dunscombe, Cadi Froehlich, Clare Harford, Alice Kelway-Bamber, Monika Kita, Sasha Morris, Sue Stephens, Kim Thornton, Billy Ward, Edgar—Walker, Ann Course, Karl England, Rebecca Fortnum, Claudia Sarnthein, Gregory Williams
Missing Narrative explores what is absent, something that is incomplete but perhaps implied. The idea of a work in transition exuding possibility but not actuality. The ‘mystery’ of the final coming together of elements in the artwork and viewer can become implicit in the narrative completing the works meaning. Philip Guston said “The painting is not a surface, but a plane which is imagined. It moves the mind. It is not there physically at all. It is an illusion, a piece of magic, so what you see is what you see.”
